10:00 AM Check-In
11:00 AM Walk Begins
Corner of San Benito & 4th Streets
Join your friends, neighbors and fellow community members as we don high heels and attempt to walk (or teeter) one mile through downtown Hollister to raise awareness about gender violence and help end sexual assault.
You can register as an individual or volunteer, join a team or create your own. Men, women, youth and families are welcome!
Proceeds from the event benefit Emmaus House Domestic Violence Shelter and Community Solutions. Funds raised will help promote the safety and healing of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and provide vital community education to help end gender violence.
Why Walk A Mile?
There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you have walked a mile in their shoes.”
- Every 9 seconds in the United States a women is beaten or assaulted. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime.
- Every 2 minutes in the United States someone is sexually assaulted. Over 2,000,000 women in California are survivors of rape. 4 out 5 rapes are perpetrated by men.
- in 2013, 27% of women surveyed in San Benito County had been victims of domestic violence. The problem is much worse among residents of Oaxacan descent, where more than 50% had experienced domestic violence.
